深入解读

看到 stance 一词，脑海里会浮现不少以其结尾的单词，诸如 distance （距离）、 instance （例子）、 substance （物质）等。不过更容易联想到的是拼写相近的熟词 stand （站立），两者同词根 sta（站），但在词源上并无直接关系。

其中， stance 源自古意大利语 stanza （停下的地方、站立位置、诗节），16世纪30年代可能经古法语 stance （休息处、海港、诗节）进入英语，原本也是指“站立位置”。

不过到了1897年后， stance 开始演变为指“站立姿势”，这在体育运动中多指在高尔夫球、棒球、板球等运动中故意采取的某种击球站姿，以及运动员预备时的始发姿势，比如：

• 这个臭名昭著的拳击手采取了攻势。
  The notorious boxer took up a fighting stance.
• 服务员改变了站姿，把重心从一只脚移到另一只脚。
  The attendant shifted her stance from one foot to another.

从这个概念出发， stance 到了1956年后开始更多的被用来喻指“观点、态度、姿态、立场”，多指个人或组织公开表明的对待某个特定事项的观点或立场，常用搭配 stance on sth ，比如：

• 官方报纸对这场战争的惨败持什么立场？
  What is the official organ's stance on the debacle of the war?
